Phosphorus-efficient Cover Crops in

Organic Production Systems

(Hugo, Walker, Smith, Wszelaki and Eash)

Within organic production systems it can be difficult to obtain suitable fertilizer materials. The purpose of this study is to:

1) Evaluate lupine, buckwheat, oats, canola, and wheat for P uptake efficiency in soils testing low in soil test P;

2) Evaluate the potential of Tennessee brown rock phospahte as a P fertilizer material in organic production systems;

3) Evaluate the above cover crops for weed suppression, biomass, residue cover, and ease of mechanical kill (by rolling at planting of the corn or soybean crop).

This study was initiated in Fall 2008.
